PhD position in the history of mathematics

There is a funded PhD opportunity in the history of mathematics at the University of Basel, within the Bernoulli-Euler Online project, starting 1 July 2016 at the earliest.

Project Title: Bernoulli­Euler Online (BEOL): Development of a platform for digital editing and a virtual research environment for historical scientific texts

Project Description

We are an interdisciplinary group of scholars and software developers who make innovative tools for interacting with sources and data in the humanities. We are building a web­based research platform for presenting and working with critical editions of printed works, manuscripts, and correspondence by the Bernoulli dynasty and Leonhard Euler. We aim to offer open access to facsimiles, transcriptions, critical texts, translations, indices, and commentaries, as well as an environment for carrying out new research using these materials. We encourage experimenting with new ideas, we offer a friendly working environment, and we have a sense of humour.

Job Description

• You will undertake your own research on a topic you propose, which should focus either on the works of Leonhard Euler and the Bernoullis or on the methodological aspects of digital critical editions.
• You will play an active role in implementing software for processing transcriptions and annotations, modelling text structures, mathematical formulae and/or figures, and developing a web­based user interface.
• You will be affiliated with the faculty of science in the discipline ‘History of Natural Sciences’.
• The PhD position is paid according to the s alaries defined by the Swiss National Science Foundation.
  

  Requirements

• You have an interdisciplinary background, including mathematics (such as an MSc in mathematics or similar experience) as well as historical research.
• The sources of BEOL are written in Latin, German, and French. Basic knowledge in one or more of these languages is desirable but not required.
• You have experience in computer programming and an interest in working with a variety of programming languages.
• You enjoy working with people from different academic disciplines, learning new technologies, and imagining new ways of using them.

• Experience with Semantic Web technologies would be an asset.

Annoncement: 4 PhD students in Environmental Humanities, Royal Institute of Technology

Royal Institute of Technology, Division of History of Science, Technology and Environment, announces 4 PhD positions in environmental humanities.

Applications are invited for 12 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) to study for a PhD in different locations within the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network ENHANCE (Environmental Humanities for a Concerned Europe). We seek four (4) PhD students for the Division of History of Science, Technology and Environment, KTH Architecture and the Built Environment, KTH Royal Institute of Technology for our four-year programme in History of Science, Technology and Environment.

The successful candidates will participate in the network’s training activities and work placements in Germany, Italy, Sweden, and the UK. Regular meetings and workshops will supplement the support provided at the different host institutions. ENHANCE is an EU-funded doctoral program consisting of 4 European academic partners which, together with their non-academic associates, operate within a transnational network dedicated to cross-disciplinary research in the Environmental Humanities field. The main aims of ENHANCE are to provide its PhD candidates with the academic and complementary skills training to place them at the forefront of a new generation of Environmental Humanities research; to lay down the foundation for a structured, sustainable approach to doctoral training in Environmental Humanities at the EU level; and to provide potential employment in a wide variety of environmentally oriented careers including an academic career. Research and training will concentrate on three major areas––natural disasters and cultures of risk, history of science and technology, and environmental ethics––and will address a series of core interlocking issues: wilderness and conservation; flooding and drought; climate change and risk; and waste, environmental justice, and environmental health.

CFP: Teknik- och vetenskapshistoriska dagar 2015

Den 15–17 april 2015 anordnas den nationella konferensen Teknik- och vetenskapshistoriska dagar i Lund. Konferensen anordnas vartannat år och riktar sig till forskare och doktorander inom teknik- och vetenskapshistoria och angränsande forskningsfält samt till personer verksamma inom museisektorn. Arrangör för 2015 års konferens är avdelningen för idé- och lärdomshistoria vid Lunds universitet i samarbete med Svenska Nationalkommittén för teknik- och vetenskapshistoria.

Inbjuden key-noteföreläsare är Kristin Asdal, Senter for teknologi, innovasjon og kultur (TIK) vid Oslo universitet.

Historiska studier av vetenskap och teknik bedrivs inom en rad discipliner och områden, alltifrån teknik- och vetenskapshistoria, idéhistoria, medicinhistoria, miljöhistoria, ekonomisk historia och teknik- och vetenskapsstudier till etnologi, sociologi och kulturstudier och vi vill uppmuntra doktorander och forskare från samtliga dessa discipliner att delta.

Vi välkomnar deltagare med följande typer av bidrag:

– Individuella papers eller presentationer på valfritt tema

– Förslag på sessioner på valfritt tema

– Individuella bidrag som anknyter till konferensens tema/teman

Inom ramen för konferensen planeras ett antal teman varav ett är ”Universitetshistoria – vägar till vitalisering och reflexion”. Universitetshistoria som genre har varit påfallande traditionell och främst producerats av enskilda lärosäten i samband med olika jubileer. Det universitetshistoriska temat vill därför inbjuda till en bred diskussion om hur denna genre kan förnyas men också göras mer allmängiltig och relevant. Inte minst mot bakgrund av universitetets snabba förändring under senare tid är det angeläget att utveckla en historieskrivning som kan ge nya perspektiv på universitetet som central kunskapsinstitution i samhället. Det inbegriper även kunskapsproduktionens villkor inom andra akademiska institutioner och miljöer samt hur denna kunskap tillämpas inom olika delar av samhället.

På fredag eftermiddag kommer det att finnas möjlighet för konferensens deltagare att besöka kärnkraftverket i Barsebäck för en guidad tur. Noteras bör att antalet platser på denna rundtur är begränsat. Konferensens språk är svenska, övriga skandinaviska språk samt engelska. Sista dag för anmälan av individuella abstracts (250 ord) och förslag på sessioner är 15 januari 2015. Anmälan sker på konferensens hemsida, där även praktisk information om boende, konferensavgift etc. kommer fortlöpande att uppdateras.
